Clearwell Mobility and Brighton Walking Football Club celebrated the return of the Clearwell Cup on Saturday 7th July at Longhill Sports Centre in Ovingdean, Brighton.

The second edition of the annual event was organised by members of the Brighton and Hove Walking Football Club and drew teams from as far away as Neath in South Wales and Watford in Hertfordshire to the Sussex countryside.

A total of 11 teams took part in the cup sponsored by Clearwell Mobility with the teams being split into 3 initial groups and then progressing onto a separate round of matches to battle it out for the coveted Clearwell Cup. After a number of hard fought matches in the mid-summer heat, Neath, Watford Orange, Young Bucks and Brighton Penguins were all crowned as champions in their respective final groups.

John Deacon, from the Brighton Dolphins stated “The Clearwell Cup competition is held to raise the awareness of walking football for those over 50 and all genders. The tournament was played in good spirit, with some skilful football on show. It was pleasing that our farthest entry, Neath Dragons, won the tournament, which was well deserved.”

Duncan Gillett, Managing Director of Clearwell Mobility was quoted as saying, “We are very happy to continue to sponsor the Clearwell Cup and the Brighton & Hove club itself. The fact that the cup saw an increase of teams taking part this year, despite the scorching heat and the fact the England international team were in a World Cup quarter final match the same afternoon, shows the dedication and passion that these teams have to their sport.”

The club are always looking for new members and meet regularly for training in Preston Park, Brighton on Sunday mornings and then again in Moulsecoomb Community Leuisre Centre on Friday afternoons.
